Mariners lose nail biter in 16 innings
SEATTLE -- In a game with zero runs scored in the first 13 innings, the Chicago White Sox and Mariners put on a show in front of 20,000-plus fans Wednesday.
Hisashi Iwakuma started on the mound for the M's and delivered 8 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 5 White Sox.
Still scoreless until the top of the 14th inning, when the White Sox drove in 5 runs of 3 singles and a double, making the score White Sox 5, Mariners 0, in the middle of the 14th inning.
With their backs against the wall and down 5 runs, the Mariners loaded up the bases with 1 out for Endy Chavez. With a 2-1 count, Chavez singles to left field, scoring Michael Saunders from 3rd, making it a 4-run game.
Two batters later, Kyle Seager steps up to the plate with the bases loaded. Behind in the count, 1-2, Seager blasts one to right field for a grand slam home run to tie up the game at 5 runs a piece. It is Seagers 8th HR of the season. With that grand slam, Seager becomes the first MLB player in history, to tie a game with a grand slam homerun, in extra innings.
Scoring stopped until the Top of the 16th inning, when Gordon Beckham and Alejandro De Aza scored for the White Sox making it White Sox 7, Mariners 5 at the middle of the 16th inning.
In the bottom of the 16th inning, White Sox relief pitcher Addison Reed struck out Brendan Ryan, Endy Chavez, and Jason Bay (who set a Mariner club record today with 8 At Bats) to end the game with a final score of White Sox 7, Mariners 5.
The Chicago White Sox (25-32) travel back home to Chicago Thursday to face the Oakland Athletics (36-25), in a 4-game series.
The Mariners (26-34) on Thursday take on the New York Yankees (34-25) in a 4-game series here at Safeco Field.
