New detour routes in place around collapsed I-5 Skagit River bridge

MOUNT VERNON - WSDOT officials have changed the detour routes around the collapsed Interstate 5 Skagit River bridge in Mount Vernon.  The new routes were announced Saturday morning at a media briefing near the bridge site.  Due to the collapse, I-5 is closed between State Route 538 (College Way) in Mount Vernon and George Hopper Road.

There are three northbound detour options:

1) Exit 227, follow signs east to SR 538, turn left onto Riverside Drive, then left onto George Hopper Road, and back to I-5

2) Exit 226, follow signs to SR 536/East Kincaid St.  Continue to SR 536, then turn right onto SR 20 and back to I-5.

There are two southbound detour options:

1) Exit 227, follow signs east onto George Hopper Road.  Next, head south on Riverside Drive/Burlington Boulevard, turn right onto SR 538/East College Way and back to I-5

2) Exit 230, follow signs west so SR 20/Avon Cutoff, then south onto Avon Allen Road.  Next, head east on SR 536/Memorial Highway and back to I-5.
