Sue Bird's knee surgery 'successful' -- but out for season

SEATTLE -- Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird underwent successful surgery to remove a cyst in her left knee today. The operation took place at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Conn.

“Sue underwent routine left knee surgery and it was successful,” said Dr. Michael Joyce. “We treated damage that was sustained last year. There were no problems or complications.”

Bird will stay in Connecticut through May and plans to begin rehabilitation immediately. The expected recovery time for this is six months. It was announced in March that Bird will forgo the entire WNBA season to heal.

“Surgery went well,” said Bird. “I feel fine and am at home resting. Looking forward to being back in Seattle with my teammates!”
