Pudgy pup undergoes “tummy tuck”

If they had a “Biggest Loser” TV show for dogs, there’s one pudgy pup from Portland who could be the star.   Yesterday, the four-legged friend with a weight problem, underwent what may be the first “tummy tuck” for dogs.

Last August, the pleasantly plump dachsund named “Obie” tipped the scales at 77 lbs.  Since then, his owner has put him on a crash diet and Obie dropped down to 37 lbs.

That left him with a whole lot of extra skin.

So yesterday, a veterinarian in Portland performed the procedure normally administered to humans.

The operation took off about two lbs. of loose, wrinkled skin.

“He’s always had the personality where you can really tell he wants to interact,” said Obie’s owner Nora Vanatta.  “He wants to get around.  So now that he can it’s pretty exciting.  He’s just getting to be a dog.”

Obie’s owner says the dog did amazingly well.  He mostly slept overnight, and this morning was up and wagging his tail.  Obie’s home resting now and still losing weight.

His owner plans to get him down to 28 lbs.

In case your not familiar withthe backgtound of this, the dog lost 40 lbs over 8 mths through healthy eating and as much exercise as he was capable of doing, considering his physical condition. The "tummy tuck" was not cosmetic in nature, he literally had skin dragging the ground and that kept it raw and susceptable to infection and disease. he also had a laarge amount on his chast that he stepped on when wlaking. So the surgery removed that so he can walk and run and not have the skin problems. And, the story has made many, many pet owners more aware of how important it is to maintain their pets at a healthy weight. All in all, its been educational and heart warming to follow the story the past 8 mths.

They also forgot to let peope know that the previous owners had dementia. Unfortunately they were feeding their dog to death and did not realize it. So the current owner fostered Obie and he lost the weight under her watch.

"Pleasantly plump"? The dog was dangerously obese. "Crash diet"? He lost 40 pounds over 8 months. Please report the facts.
