NTSB releases findings on Japan Airlines 787 fire

WASHINGTON -- The National Transportation Board released its finding on a two-month-long investigation into the meltdown of a lithium-ion battery Thursday on a Boeing 787 flight to Boston.

The interim factual report is the first released by the NTSB on the Japan Airlines 787 fire on Jan. 7. The findings were not conclusive, and the transportation administration is expected to continue its review of the design, certification and manufacturing process of the 787 lithium-ion battery system.

There was no indication that the battery was overcharged.

The NTSB is now examining the certification and testing of the 787 battery system, wondering if outsourcing in the battery's certification process had anything to do with the flaws in the plane's electrical system.
