EVERETT — The Snohomish County prosecuting attorney has charged a county corrections officer with a felony charge of sexual misconduct. According to court documents, the guard reportedly provided an inmate with cookies in exchange for sexual favors.
The guard, Abner Canda, 58, is facing a charge of first-degree custodial sexual misconduct and was been placed on paid administrative leave in January while an investigation into the allegation was conducted.
The victim, a 22-year-old woman, told police in mid-January that she was coming forward because she “felt guilty for doing what I did and also because at one point I did certain things because he’d bring me in stuff [in exchange for sexual favors].” She added that she was “ashamed” of her actions and is trying to “be a better person now …that’s why I’m saying something.” She reportedly told police there were three different occasions where she had relations with Canda.
The woman had been incarcerated at the county jail between November 2012 and January
Detectives obtained video footage from the jail that corroborated the victim’s story. They also interviewed two other inmates who also reported having sexual relations with Canda — he has not been charged in connection with those allegations. Canda has been a corrections officer since 2007. He has no prior record.
