Protecting your home from burglars

The type of  preparations you make when you go on vacation could potentially make you a target for thieves.

Detectives in California say they’ve uncovered roughly $1 million in stolen property from a burglary ring spanning the last three years. They said the victims are people who asked the Los Angeles Times to hold their newspaper while they were on vacation. Police said a vendor that distributes the paper sold the list of “vacation holds” to the alleged thieves.

Here are some tips on how to avoid becoming a target for thieves while you’re on vacation.

Protecting your home is vitally important for any home owner, not just to save valuable property but to ensure your family's safety too. Keeping the bushes trimmed by the front door and windows will prevent anyone from hiding there. If you are planning on vacation, arrange with your neighbors to have your mail/packages picked up, so they don't pile up in the box as that is a sure sign of an abandoned, empty home. Put your lights on a timer, that alternates on/off time daily, so that a potential burglar doesn't suspect that no one is home. If you are home, keep on lights in one part of your home all night, maybe even just in the kitchen and garage and provide proper external lighting as this can deter lurkers.

Also, don't forget it's just as important to protect your family from natural elements (heat and cold) by installing proper external wall insulation and interior wall insulation.

Good architectural facades insulate the home against harsh winter and summer temperatures, allowing for comfortable living year round.
