VIDEO: Men touting rifles walk around Portland to ‘educate’

PORTLAND, ORE. (KPTV) — Two men carrying assault rifles on their backs said they were simply exercising their Second Amendment right, but police said they scared plenty of people.Calls started coming in to 911 dispatchers shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday. Callers said two men with guns strapped to their backs were walking through the area of Southeast Seventh Avenue and Spokane Street in Portland’s Sellwood neighborhood.

Officers arrived in the area and contacted both 22-year-old men. They were carrying rifles openly on their backs and were valid concealed handgun license holders in Oregon.

The men told officers they were hoping to educate the public about gun rights.

Officers explained that they were likely to continue generating 911 calls from alarmed people in the area, which would require a police response. Officers reported neither man seemed interested in those concerns.

“Exercising my rights with a rifle to try to decrease the demonizing of peacefully exercising your rights in public,” one of the men told Fox 12. He said his name is Warren, but did not want to provide a last name.

Portland police identified the men as Warren Drouin and Steven Boyce.

Officers said carrying firearms openly is legal in Oregon and carrying a concealed gun is legal with a valid license. However, doing one or both may generate 911 calls and possibly tie up resources that are needed for a true emergency.

Warren said he hoped people would approach them and talk to them, instead of calling police.

“What they really should do is observe the person to determine if the person is aggressive,” he said of seeing someone with a gun in public. “We’re not doing anything threatening to anyone.”

The Portland Police Bureau, however, asks anyone who sees someone armed with guns to immediately call 911.

    Time the cops pull them over for civil disobedience and arrest them. Those guns are not secured, not a concealed handgun and not under control.

    Rights come with responsibilities! You may have the right to own a gun, you however have to look after it. Not treat it like a fashion accessory!

      Let me educate you, any weapon in the open does not require a concealed license, period. Only weapons that are hid require a license. Yep, people will call in to the police and it does use resources, but it is legal to carry. If I were these men, I would get a smaller gun, conceal it, as they have a license to do it, so this does not draw public attention them. I hope they listen to the officer, because when they do this to make a statement, it does alarm people, and will it cause the police to be called.

      If you look at that video and that was you getting beat down for NO REASON. and me and a couple of citizens carrying our assault rifles knowing there is a video running to show the whole truth We would have stopped that fricken Jhon Wayne Criminals beating the shit out of you or they would have dies but you my friend would have thanked us. I know there is good officers out there but its clear the bad ones out number the GOOD. When law enforcement breaks the law thay are CRIMINALS So if the law braeks the law there is no law and WE THE PEOPLE that carry guns are going to be CITIZENZ FIRST and maybe ONLY LINE OF DEFENSE< So if tour not a bad cop wake up read the second ammendment of OUR CONSTITUTION use your brains.     The weapons are definitely secured, and for sure under control. I doubt it was even loaded but i'm sure they had something in pockets but that doesn't mean anything. fact is they have total control of the weapons in the pics.

    I love to see people who excersize their rights. Just like the furst guy who was screaming bloody murder bout these two patriots. It’s his right. Now it’s also my right to carry a weapon either in the open or concealed.

    Truth is more murders and assts are commuted each year with hammers, clubs and other assorted blunt objects that are commuted with an asst rifle or handgun. But that’s just the media over hyping everything that they can to make it a huge phonominon. Yes I know I didnt spell that right. It’s time that gun owners, the responsible ones, stepped up and had a say. God knows there is enough of us.

    In WA state our state Constitution SECTION 24 RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired, but nothing in this section shall be construed as authorizing individuals or corporations to organize, maintain or employ an armed body of men.
    That seems to say all these private security companies that provide armed gaurds are not allowed, yet give Inslee a week and he will be calling to disarm the individual. It is only a matter of time. The progs have turned the world upside down in their quest to remold it to their hearts content.

        First, let me educate you and liberals like you. We have a Constitution that has the first two amendments which protect our rights to free speech and the right to bear arms. When either of these two fundamental rights is breached, there will be no protection of our Constitutional rights or our rights contained in Bill of Rights. It is a misconception to believe that the second amendment is anything but what it says it is. The second amendment of the Constitution and Article Four of the Bill of Rights states in 27 well worded words, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” There is nothing in this in this statement, amendment or any other amendment that limits our rights and in fact the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are very clear in the rights we have and why we have these rights.

        The constitution outlines providing for the common defence to secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. This is pretty clear that the founding fathers knew that we need to have a common defense the same as our government for future generations.

    The NRA is a minority political action group no longer concerned about hunting, firearms safety and education. They appear to be a lobby for the gun manufacturers. Public safety and the greater good of the country is more important than the proliferation of semi-auto guns. Oath keepers buzz off.

      I agree with you. How can the public tell what they are up to as they walk around town with their toys? They aren't in police uniforms? Are they about to rob a bank?       You do realize the media focuses on those incidents and that you're in fact more likely to be killed in a car accident, from a fall, or medical error than from a firearm right? Over 67% of the firearms deaths that are most often quoted are suicides not homicides or accidental deaths. And firearms deaths from homicide and accidents have dropped significantly the last 20 years whereas suicides have pretty much remained constant across the board by method.
